Resident Birds

Bird Watching

  • La Oliva is a perfect place for bird watching in freedom. In its plains, both sandy (jables) and stony, it nests a very interesting community of steppe birds, whose plumage camouflages them in the almost desert environments where they live.

Among the most noteworthy species are the avutarda hubara, the corredor sahariano and the ganga ortega. There are, also, insular forms of common alcaraván, terrera marismeña and the camachuelo trompetero. The mountainous areas harbor Tagarote hawks and common alimoches (locally known as guirre), busardo ratonero, vulgar cernícalo, etc.

  • Fuerteventura is, together with Lanzarote, the easternmost island of the Canary archipelago and, therefore, closer to the African continent. Lacking forests, it bears a great environmental aridity and presents in an important part of its territory an unusual volcanic landscape. This desert-like island is dominated by the plains, although there are also volcanic cones, mountains and scattered ravines that diversify the monotonous landscape.
